Turning a multi-stage face fit test into a guided digital process
Face fit testing involves more than recording a final result. Preparation, equipment checks, sensitivity testing, timed exercises and certification all need to happen in the right order, with information carried from one stage to the next.
The challenge
The test depends on several checks before the actual assessment can begin. Equipment, the testing environment, the person being tested and the respirator all need to be considered before moving forward.
The sensitivity result affects what happens during the main test. The tester needs to record the point at which the solution can be detected and use that result during the following exercises.
During a practical test, the tester needs to follow instructions, timings and required actions while concentrating on the person being assessed.
The test contains different exercises that require the person being tested to move, breathe and speak in specific ways. Instructions need to be clear enough to follow while the test is taking place.
A test that stops or produces an unexpected result needs a clear next step. Simply recording a failed result does not help the tester identify what should be checked before trying again.
The completed test needs to remain useful after the session is over. Test details, signatures, results and previous certificates need to be accessible rather than being left as a one-off assessment.
How we built the solution
Created a guided preparation journey that brings these checks together, with supporting information and an instructional video available when the tester needs a refresher.
Connected sensitivity testing with the main test, carrying the recorded result forward to determine the required solution quantities during the face fit exercises.
Designed each exercise around the information needed at that moment, combining instructions, visual guidance, countdowns, spray quantities and audio reminders within the testing flow.
Added visual and instructional guidance for individual exercises, helping testers explain the required movements, breathing and speaking actions while the assessment is in progress.
Built a troubleshooting and retest process that guides testers through relevant checks and allows the assessment to restart from the appropriate stage when required.
Created a digital record and certification flow that captures the required information and signatures before generating a certificate that can be downloaded and emailed.

The outcome
Mask Mate gives the main client a way to provide face fit testing services across multiple companies, while giving each organisation the tools to manage its own testing programme.
